Why I’m Totally Obsessed with Pilates (And Why For Me, It Might Just Beat Yoga)

A very biased Pilates opinion.........
Okay, let’s talk about two of the biggest heavyweights in the fitness world: Yoga and Pilates. They’re both amazing in their own right, but I’m here to make a case for why Pilates has my heart in a way that yoga just doesn’t. Don’t get me wrong—I love a good downward dog as much as the next person. However here’s why I think Pilates has the edge over yoga and why I still love by job as a Pilates instructor.
Body Awareness Like Never Before
You know that feeling when you suddenly become hyper-aware of your posture while scrolling through Instagram? That’s Pilates working its magic. Pilates teaches you to be so in tune with your body that you start noticing how you sit, stand, and move throughout your day. It’s like having a little Pilates instructor in your brain reminding you to engage your core while you’re washing dishes or sitting at your desk.
Core Powerhouse
Pilates is all about the core. When your core is strong, everything else falls into place. Your posture improves, your lower back stops complaining, and you walk around like you own the place. And the best part? The core strength you build in Pilates carries over into everything you do. Whether you’re lifting groceries or chasing after your kids, you’ll feel the difference.
Posture, Posture, Posture!
Speaking of posture, Pilates is like the ultimate posture coach. You’ll find yourself standing taller and sitting straighter without even thinking about it. The emphasis on alignment and control in Pilates makes it impossible not to apply those principles to your everyday life (including your Yoga class). Soon, you’ll be the person gently nudging others to sit taller during office meetings.
The All-in-One Workout and Rehab Plan
Pilates is the Swiss Army knife of fitness routines. Not only does it offer a comprehensive strength and flexibility program, but it’s also a rehab superstar. Got an injury? Pilates has got you covered. The controlled, low-impact movements make it perfect for recovering from injuries while still building strength. It’s like getting a workout and physical therapy session rolled into one. Pilates can be as gentle or as challenging as you need it to be, depending on where you’re at physically.
Why Pilates Takes the Cake
At the end of the day, whether you’re a die-hard yogi or a Pilates enthusiast, the best exercise is the one you love and stick with. But if you ask me, Pilates has a sneaky way of becoming not just a workout, but a lifestyle. It’s the kind of practice that seeps into every aspect of your life, making you more mindful, stronger, and more balanced in everything you do.
So, while I’ll always have a soft spot for yoga and sneak moves into my Pilates practice regularly, Pilates is where my heart truly belongs. Whether you’re looking to strengthen your body, rehabilitate an injury, or just stand a little taller, Pilates might just be the workout you didn’t know you were missing.
