Joseph began working as a nurse and used bed springs to create resistance-based exercises to help rehabilitate bedridden soldiers. This ingenious use of springs evolved into the Reformer we know today.
In the 1920s, Joseph Pilates moved to New York City, where he opened his first studio. His method quickly caught on, especially among dancers who appreciated its focus on core strength, flexibility, and injury prevention. From there, Pilates slowly but steadily gained popularity, eventually becoming the worldwide fitness phenomenon it is today.
So, What Exactly Is Reformer Pilates?
The Reformer is the centerpiece of Pilates equipment. It consists of a flat, cushioned platform called the carriage, which slides back and forth within a frame. This carriage is attached to springs that provide adjustable resistance, offering both support and challenge as you move.
